Waitrose Unpacked

Waitrose Unpacked Oxford - Trial for first store in England

Oxford is a beautiful place to get lost, and the aisles of Botley road Waitrose, are no exception.

Here, there is a new initiative by Waitrose (to reduce plastic waste), they have the regular aisles of fruit and aisles of veg but instead of it all coming in a plastic container wrapped in cling film it's loose and in bundles or bunches ready to be placed in your trolly or basket.

The idea here is to have customers bring their own containers and fill them up, I didn't get as far as viewing the range of loose grains and oats etc. I did notice a sprinkling of porridge oats lining the counter at the check out desk, at the lane for shoppers with basket only!

They could have the Duchy (Organic) fruit/veg range in the Unpacked Waitrose scheme too; which 50% of is already wrapped in compostable, degradable or biodegradable materials.

Other Supermarkets could take on this initiative and smaller shops, if not too much of a palaver. Even if a small change comes from the scheme it's a good thing; got to carry on carrying on in the mission of supporting waste reduction.
