Better Food Trader's Project
Better Food Trader's Project
Talks for 'Urban Food Fortnight, 2019' included 'Better Food Trader's Project' - an initiative to try to get buyers to buy more sustainably. Food was provided by Calthorpe Project and Alara Healthfoods for this event.I went along to the Impact Hub, Kings Cross, securing a free bursary place after spending the day by-the-sea with friends in Brighton. This talk delved into the food industry's need to adapt as it comes under pressure from consumers, particularly young people, demanding more transparency about the ethical footprint of products.
Currently with Supermarket chains, the profits go back to the chain rather than to the farmers (they keep 15% of their takings and only 5% goes back to the farmers).
I was helped to feel inspired to make changes and shop for more locally produced food, including for produce grown in the Greater London area.
Here in Britain, Suma, Essential & Infinity are all ethically driven wholesale businesses.
